Dawn of Mana gives gamers one of the most breathtaking, engulfing RPGs ever made

by Philip Hanan

April 25, 2007 - The world has been flooded with World of Mana titles in the past few years, but none of them have presented a new game to the series. Although entertaining, each game has been a remake or re-release of an older Mana title. Dawn of Mana, although a prequel, presents a brand new adventure for U.S. gamers in glorious 3D!

The fourth game in the series, about the origins of the tree of Mana, truly brings its characters to life with the power of the PS2 Emotion Engine. The movie animations are quirky and colorful, with characters displaying much emotion on screen. The in-game animations are just as wonderful, with characters chatting with creatures while expressing such emotions as joy, sorrow, etc.

The in-game creatures are probably the most unique game creatures ever invented for a video game. Some look like animal-like fairies while others look like strange butterflies. Unlike Final Fantasy, there seems to be an equal amount of good creatures and bad. The good creatures do not appear to help you in battle, however. Parties do not exist in this game at all.

The game's non-battle engine reminds me of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as you will be exploring very realistic environments, but some zany, Windwaker-esque characters pop up fairly often. The exploration is set up like a platform game, but if a monster is nearby, you'll attack using a battle system and meter system similar to Kingdom Hearts. The main character uses a vine-like Keyblade-type weapon to defend himself most of the time, but appears to either be able to morph his weapon or find a new one which acts as a whip.

Mana

The whip's ability reminds you a bit of the Gravity gun in Half-Life 2. Just wave the whip around and you can toss items such as barrels at enemies. Unlike Half-Life 2, instead of using one item at a time, you can whip several items at enemies while the whip is extended. You also do not have to retract the whip.

Although the presentation is quite fantasy-based, the game's physics are based upon real world physics. Not only does the whip move as if it were made from a real vine, the environment reacts just like in real life. Boulders can be shoved and rolled down large hills, and a character's weight may displace an object. For example, a large enemy's weight caused a bridge to buckle and the planks to fall underneath him.

This type of game physics program combined with the incredible power of the Emotion Engine presents a more encompassing RPG than ever before seen on the PS2. Talking trees and fuzzy creatures may seem lame, but honestly, the presentation made me want to play this game immediately.

The sound quality matches the graphics and every sound effect's timing is dead on. I've only heard the Japanese voice acting so far, which is quirky, so I can't say whether English voice acting will try to set a more serious tone or not.

The control scheme should be very similar to Kingdom Hearts since the battle system is the same, but it's possible that the right analog stick will at least be used to control the whip if not the sword control. In a 3D action RPG, it would be amazing to be able to attack in 3D as well.

I believe Dawn of Mana is the best game of the series and will attract Square Enix fans who never tried a Mana game before, just because it is so unique. It's definitely an entertaining game for E10+, but also a wonderful experience for Teen gamers. I can't say Mature males would be very interested in a less graphically realistic, less gorey RPG, but Mature females should still enjoy this.

I personally believe that if every gamer was forced to play it, 65% of them would actually enjoy the game somewhat if not a lot, so look for this game May 22nd to experience what a Japanese action RPG should be.

February 22, 2007 - If you are an RPG fan, you've heard of Square Enix. Even if you are not an RPG fan, you've probably heard of Square Enix. You've also probably heard of the World of Mana and if you haven't, then you will be in for a treat come March 2007 when it makes its U.S. debut on the PS2. A whole new gaming experience awaits with the Dawn of Mana.

The story will center around a 16 year old boy named Eldy and a 16 year old girl named Ritzia. Eldy's past is a mystery since he was found by the people of his village very early in his childhood. He befriended Ritzia, a priestess who can hear the voices of the planet and nature. Then there is Puck, a Rabite that became the pet of Ritzia after being separated from his family. Their journey begins after their village is invaded by a foreign country's army. Throughout the game, the origins of the legends behind the Mana Tree, as well as the Sword of Mana, will finally be revealed.

Released in Japan in December as Seiken Densetsu 4, Dawn of Mana will be the first true sequel for the franchise in 10 years. While any fan of the series would be excited about the possible return to an RPG style they have so longed for, most importantly, something similar to the gameplay of the titles on the SNES. Square Enix however, had a little something different in mind.

The most notable change will be the break-away from the 2D graphics. Using the Havok engine from Half-Life 2, the players will be able to interact with their 3D environments. The three dimensional platform is different from all of the previous titles in the series. Players will be able to attack with swords, jump, use a projectile weapon, which are actually elemental fairies, and a whip like weapon that will allow you to grab an enemy or an object in the environment. The game will rely on you doing this to defeat certain enemies for bonus points.

Dawn of Mana will be heavily action oriented like Secret of Mana, but the gameplay will feel very different. Square Enix has decided to use the game as a showcase for realistic physics on the PS2. When you hit a rock or other items that are classified under the group of Mono, Japanese for 'things', it goes rolling down a cliff. When you slash an enemy, he will go flying back and smash into other enemies. Due to the Havok engine, interacting with the Mana world in various ways is one of the big charms of the game. In addition to a standard combo attack with a sword, the main character Eldy has a whip. This can be used to grab onto enemies and mono. Once you've grabbed onto something you can drag it around or toss it at walls and enemies. Smashing mono on the ground can stun enemies. This can be useful for taking out giant enemies, such as the crab boss at the end of the first level.

Dawn of Mana will be an action heavy RPG, with a lot of story. It will be split into stages with lengthy voiced cinemas advancing the story in between. Each stage will have a simple directive, defeat the enemies in the stage, find keys, and open doors. One of the high replayability factors is once you clear a stage it will become available at the main menu for free play. The other is Challenge Mode, which will become available later in the game, where you will have a certain amount of time to destroy all of the enemies of a stage.

The move to a three dimensional platform has allowed Dawn of Mana to explore the beauty of the World of Mana. The characters and environments are sleek and simple in design. Vibrantly fresh colors add tranquil beauty to a world torn asunder by war. The cute factor is present as well. In one of the trailers, Eldy is attacked by a creature using hay bails. The creature attacks with an ice spell and Eldy becomes frozen, but not like you'd think. Instead of just freezing in place, Eldy turns into a cousin of Frosty the Snowman. Musically, Dawn of Mana will be equally beautiful. Square Enix has never let their fans down when it comes to the thematic sounds of their RPGs.

Dawn

There is one concern of playability however. Dawn of Mana will use every button on the PS2 controller for combinations and item use. At first, this seems to be inventive and more demanding of the player's involvement. Instead of the traditional search and select option of RPGs, each button will have its own functionality. This may create a complexity to the game and harm the overall play value.

Dawn Of Mana

Aside from the possible controller faults, Dawn of Mana will be a welcomed change in the franchise. Advancing the series in terms of graphics and gameplay will easily invite new fans to the World of Mana. With the track record of Square Enix and The World of Mana series, there will be no doubt in your mind to pick this title up, but depending on how the controls turn out, you might want to wait to read our review first.
